Essay's

There were many interesting and not so interesting essay's that my fellow classmates presented. Everyone performed well, even on boring topics. I would have to say the essay that stood out the most to me and the one that was most intriguing was titled "How to know if you’re dead." The topic of this essay was over why being an organ donor is a good decision. The author is trying to inform society that being an organ donor helps others. In the essay the author was in a hospital watching doctors extract a person's organs. The author explains every detail of the process in which an organ is removed. The essay was well detailed, and made me think a lot about the topic. The author explains what the doctors do during the procedure an how preserving an organ(s) is done. It was very interesting to read how the author reacted to this procedure. The author even went on to ask if it was normal to like the smell of burned flesh. To me, that was weird, but a person does not know how they are going to react to something until they are put in the situation. Another crazy detail in this story is that the person's body was still functioning. The person was brain-dead, so he was considered dead. The person was also an organ donor, and that is why the doctors were preserving his organs. This essay was very interesting, not joyful, but the most intriguing to me.
The essay that was the most un-interesting to me was "How to Pull an All-Nighter." This essay was not even really an essay at all. This was a bulleted essay and meant to be informational. The essay described different techniques on how to stay awake all night to study. In my opinion, the essay was not very informational and not interesting. Most of the points that were made I already knew. I think most people already know the information that was in this essay, so the essay was bland. The essay was a brief topic that was not intriguing to me.

College: Is it necessary?

Getting a college degree is known as the way to go if a person wants to get a good paying job that will satisfy them. Many people do not attend college and are able to get a good job. This makes a person wonder if attending college is really necessary. In my own opinion, I feel that college is completely necessary. Yes, people do get good jobs without a college education, but it takes the person longer to get to a high position to make good money. Many students that recently graduated from high school decide to take a break from college and just get a job. This can benefit the person financially but can also discourage the person from attending college. I believe that higher education is not a bad thing and is only going to benefit a person. Having knowledge is something no one can ever take. When a person is knowledgeable they are more beneficial and can probably complete a task at a better performance level. Take the medical field for instance. If a person right out of high school wanted to be a nurse they would have to go to college. A hospital or doctor’s office is not going to hire someone in a nurse position that is not qualified. I believe if a person wants something in life they have to work for it. There is no better satisfaction than knowing that a well performed job is done because of the extra knowledge a person has. Yes, college can be discouraging for some, but they person needs to sit back and look at how beneficial college really is. By attending college and earning a degree (no matter what field is chosen) more doors are opened for the person. A college degree allows a person to get a better paying job, benefits, and the guarantee that it is what the person wants to do. When going to college a person has to pick what field to study. By doing this the person has chosen for themself what they want to do. It is not like high school where you have to take certain classes to graduate even if you hate the subject. In college a person picks a field of study that he or she likes and will do well in. College is completely necessary and can only benefit a person and their life. College is something that I think everyone should think hard about. It can be tough at times, but it is definitely worth it.

Government Shut Down?

Recently the Minnesota government was shut down due to a disagreement of how funds would be dispersed. This sounds very familiar. Much like the United States scare of government shut down in April, Minnesota's issues of money actually made the state government shut down. How does a shut down like this affect a person living in Minnesota? Well, I don't know because I am not a resident of the state. I do know if the government of Georgia shut down; there would be a lot of problems. Most businesses and companies are impacted by the government in some sort of fashion. Whether being a government owned business or a personal business that has to pay taxes. Government has an impact on every life whether directly or indirectly. Government is what makes a state, and even country function properly. Government is the driving force of laws, funding roads, helping the low-income population, and much more. If government shuts down (depending on the cause) could be very dangerous. If the circumstance permits it, law official offices and firefighters could be shut down until the issue is resolved. Police offices are county funded, but not the state patrolmen. State patrolmen, if not paid, would more than likely not show up for work. Would you? This would mean a decrease in the amount of safety giving way to more crimes. Another affect would be those who get government benefits. If a government is feuding over how funds should be dispersed, this could mean a decrease or decease of programs such as WIC. If this was to occur it would give struggling mothers even more financial burdens. If a person works for a government agency and the agency shuts down because of a government shut down, that would mean no income until the employee is allowed back to work. There are many ways in which a shutdown can affect people. As for me, the main affect it would have on me is my financial aid. I receive the HOPE scholarship, and if the government was to shut down and cut out the funded program, I would have to pay more money to attended college. There are many downfalls to a government shutdown. Let's all hope Georgia does not decide to have one!

5 Hour Energy?

We all have seen the commercials and the display ads for 5 Hour Energy Shots. These little bottles are filled with caffeine that helps give that little boost of energy needed when feeling exhausted but cannot afford to go to sleep. These little shots do the same trick that coffee, soda, or energy drinks do, but you do not have to drink as much in order to feel the effects. This may all seem great, but for one woman it turned into something serious. A twenty-two year old woman decided that she wanted to drink ten of these little shots a day. Yes, I said ten a day! How crazy can you be? The bottle clearly states 5 hour energy. That means you would only need five at the most during one days’ time. The article I read did not give details on why the woman decided to take those extra five shots a day, but it did mention that this decision did not work out in her favor. She ended up being hospitalized with chest pains, nausea, vomiting, and a fever. The doctors saw nothing wrong with her and ended up sending her home because she seemed to have gotten better. After a few days she was back in the hospital with jaundice which is caused by liver failure. The lady had consumed too much vitamin B3 and it was causing severe problems. She ended up being treated and sent home okay. Boy was she lucky! It is situations like these that make me wonder why even drink something like that. Sure I have had the sodas. I know there not well for me, but I do not sit there and drink ten in a day. When it comes to energy drinks I will not touch them. I believe if your body needs rest, and then give it rest. It is human nature. Many things are proven not good for us, but we still eat, drink, and smoke them. Why? Why do we seem to use the things that harm us the most? Why waste out time here with things that can shorten the time we have? It’s not worth it. I am not saying I am perfect, let’s face it no one is. Again, why waste the time you have harming yourself. If you’re like me, you want to be here to see your kids grow up and even see their kids grow up. Don't throw that all away by being stupid. Use common sense and knowledge of what is bad for you and what is not. Let's be smart people!

Annual CT Scans

I was given the question: Should annual CT scans be given to detect early signs of lung cancer, and should insurance or the individual pay for these scans. This question got me thinking. It would be nice to know at least once a year that you are safe from cancer by just getting one scan done. Sure there could be something that did not show up on the scan but for the most part a scan like this is accurate. By having this exam you would know that nothing is wrong with you and you are healthy. Many people tend to think about their health and wonder. People want to know if some part of their body has a cancerous spot. We all know that you do not feel cancer and it is painless in the beginning. If a person does not get checked out then they will never know. There are many benefits from this type of scan. Not only will the test scan your lungs, but it will scan all internal organs, soft tissue, bones, and blood vessels. A person would have the satisfaction of knowing that the doctor did not see any problems. The CT scan allows better detailed pictures then the old-fashioned x-ray. It is a more advanced machine with many perks. The only problem is this sort of test does not come at a small price. The average price of one CT scan is over $2,000! That is a big sum of money to pay out a year on top of all of the other bills that have accumulated. In my opinion, I believe that an insurance company should cover this sort of exam. It is actually no different than an annual physical or yearly check-up with a doctor. Sure it may cost more, but it is a good procedure to have done. I am not saying that an insurance company should have to pay the entire amount to have this procedure done, but I do believe that should pay at least 75%. The whole point of insurance is for it to be there when you need it. If a person sick and have to go to the doctor, it’s there. If a person has a baby an insurance company pays. How is this any different? Older women are recommended to have a yearly mammogram done to check for signs of breast cancer. The CT scan is no different than that except for the price. They both check for cancerous spots and do the same job, but are different machines. An insurance company covers a yearly mammogram, how is a yearly CT scan any different? I believe that it is a good idea to have an annual CT scan done. It should be thought of as another annual checkup. I also believe that the insurance company should cover this expense just like they do an annual checkup.

The Internet-Positive or Negative?

The internet has gotten a lot bigger over the past decade. Many people like it but many people do not. While I was growing up the internet was just getting popular and being used. I remember when I was in elementary school we had the old fashioned computers that were only used for games or typing. I remember my teachers using over-head projectors to display pictures and writings to the class. Most were hand written write in front of us and very useful. Once I made it to middle school the internet had taken storm. The schools wanted the entire student body to learn and know how to use the internet as a resource for information. This was a fun and exciting time. Who doesn't want to go use a computer instead of sitting at a desk writing on paper and reading books? It was always the best day of the school week when we got to go to the computer lab. I believe that learning and using the internet for educational purposes is a positive thing. Yes I do believe it can be a distraction at times with all of the vast developments and social networks, but overall it is a great resource and a faster way of information. Before the internet became popular a person would have to go to the library for every book on a topic just to write an essay. Yes the library is important, but when you are crunched for time and can't make it to the library the internet is a great resource. People say that the internet is affecting learning but to me I think it is a way of improving learning. Yes the articles posted online may be shorter than a book, but it gives you the same information in a shorter amount of time. I do not think that the internet is a easy way out. I believe that the information that is put on trusted sites is just as informational as a book written on the same topic. I do not believe that the internet is going to replace books, it will help promote them. Many times the articles on the internet are traced back to a book. Sections are taken out of books and quoted. This is a means of sharing with the searcher that there are books about the topic and if you want to learn more the book is there. A lot of times a reader does not need a detailed explanation of a topic therefore the internet is used to get the information that is needed. If a reader needs a deep explanation and description a book is there also. I believe that the internet is a useful tool that we all can benefit from using. I believe that the internet and books are used intertwined, but in a more efficient way. The internet is a way to quickly find information on a topic and a book is a way to get a more in depth explanation of a topic.

How to Know Who to Trust?

There are a lot of dishonest people in the world and it is difficult to tell who they are. Everyone wants to know that they have someone to trust and tell all of their problems to, but how do you choose that person? A way to tell is their background. If a person is used to being the center of attention and only cares about them self, you know they are not someone to trust. If a person is in love with them self it’s not likely that it will change. Another way to tell is how a person acts around others. If you notice that the person is nice to others to their face, but then talks about them behind their back you know they are not trustworthy. Sometimes it is really hard to tell if a person is someone to trust. The best thing to do is get to know a person well before sharing private and intimate thoughts and feelings with them. A person's business is only theirs to share, but if shared with the wrong person it may no longer be just between the two people. Many people find it entertaining to carry on a conversation about others business. In my opinion I feel that it is not. A person has to be unsatisfied with their own life to concentrate on another. Whether your business or someone else’s, it should be keep quiet and personal. The world has enough to worry about besides drama.
